The Lost Realities Of Hog Caller

The Lost Realities Of Hog Caller is a found footage movie that follows the exploits of the elusive, Satan fueled group of outlaws that make up the band Hog Caller. Local news anchor Skip Jenkins is on the hunt to find the members of Hog Caller and gain more info on them. When he stumbles upon a case of VHS tapes that were supposedly owned by Hog Caller at a swap meet he is in for quite an insane viewing experience. Once the film kicks off and things get surreal it doesn't let up for a second. Prepare yourself for a roller coaster ride of insanity, and also, boatloads of pork.

What a mindfuck of a film. There are many memorable scenes throughout and this is mainly because of the extremely strange things going on. The section where Vomitorius is carrying a slaughtered pig around in a stroller and feeding it milk and ice cream was the first to stick out. From then on the film just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Eventually Osama Bin Laden, George W. Bush, and Elvis pop up in the story. Every moment where you start thinking things can't possibly get anymore strange, you will be quickly blindsided by something that completely outdoes anything prior. Also, in the world of Hog Caller it seems to be easy to catch psychedelic mushrooms while fishing (someone please direct me to this body of water). When these two start tripping balls things go even more off the deep-end.

The acting in the film is solid. Although the cast is fairly small they all hold their own. This flick has actually gotten me fairly interested in Hog Caller's music, which I'm sure is part of the goal. Upon experiencing this manic piece of cinema you truly get a decent insight on Hog Caller's odd brand of humor. While, their music may not appeal to everyone it would be hard to deny their shear ability to create excruciatingly strange, head-scratching moments.

Overall Hog Caller is an insane flick with some very odd, zany moments. The film gives an interesting take on the "found footage" genre and really just goes balls to the wall throughout. It really plays out like a long, well made music video. This is by no means a bad thing. I can't recall the last time I was this entertained by a movie that was music related. A fair warning should be left here for anyone planning on viewing the film. The music of Hog Caller is very abrasive and harsh and does play quite frequently in the film. Even if you're not a fan of this style of music I would still recommend the film because it is really something you should experience once. Fans of all things surreal, heavy, taboo, and just downright wrong should get a kick out of The Lost Realities of Hog Caller.

The Afternoon Gentlemen- Pissedography

The Afternoon Gentlemen is a powerviolence band from the UK. This album is a compilation that features tracks from many of their previous splits and EP's. These guys are all about getting wasted and violent. Expect 38 tracks of pure, unadulterated chaos, all crammed into just under one hour of aural battery.

For the most part the songs here struggle to make it past the one minute mark. That is until towards the end which features the material from the Afterdoom EP. The final three songs on the disc all break one minute, in fact one of them breaks eight. When compared to the other material here the Afterdoom EP is something that definitely comes out of leftfield. It's obvious you're still hearing The Afternoon Gentlemen but rather than ripping through your ears at dangerous speeds they are trotting along at a turtles pace. These three tracks are riddled in sludge and prove that The Afternoon Gentlemen can be just as punishing using a different approach.

The riffs are very thrashy the majority of the time but there are also plenty of heavy grooves to keep things interesting. These mosh moments are sure to throw everyone in the area into an uproar. The style of powerviolence we see played here is very old school in a sense, having more in common with Spazz than newer acts like Magrudergrind. The variation of vocal styles used here is ridiculous. You've got some crazy piercing screams, gang chants, gutturals, yells, and the all too familiar Spazz "UGHSSS". This gives a slight upperhand when compared to many other modern powerviolence bands that typically stick to one or two approaches on each release.

Overall Pissedography is obviously a great way to get into The Afternoon Gentlemen. It features most of their material so far aside from live recordings and is still easy to sit back and listen to from start to finish. Even though the songs are from separate releases Pissedography still flows well as an album. Fans of powerviolence will definitely enjoy The Afternoon Gentlemen and fans of hardcore and grind shouldn't find it to be too huge leap either. Certainly one of the best powerviolence bands representing the UK right now. Get it.

Harpoon- Deception Among Birds

Harpoon is back and they are just as noisy as ever! The band formed back in 2007 and since they have put out a demo, a full-length, and popped up on a couple splits. Their sound is pretty "all over the place" to say the least. At one moment you may find yourself in a massive whirlwind of feedback filled, grind/powerviolence and the next you are hearing some very enthralling doom. Deception Among Birds clocks in at just under forty minutes and within that time Harpoon is going to do anything possible to win you over.

The guitarwork featured here varies quite a bit. Many sections on the album are very fast paced and filled with adrenaline and fury. This sections are great and these dudes definitely have the ability to thrash your face off, but when they take the time to slow things down things get very interesting. A prime example of this is the epic "Troglodyte's Delight". The track breaks seven minutes and is without a doubt one of the best things Harpoon has ever recorded. The slow, hypnotic riffs ring throughout the head of the listener for what seems like an eternity, which is by no means of bad thing. "Troglodyte's Delight" could be the soundtrack of my life and I would live on with no complaints.

Things get a little experimental at times. One example of this is towards the end of the title track. A brief moment of feedback hits and then you are sent flying into a wall of odd noises. This goes on for a few minutes and throughout that time the layers of noises dissipate slowly to reveal a simple acoustic melody to close out the album. The vocals are filled with hate and are very in your face for the most part. Toney takes every opportunity given to assault your ears and he is successful 100% of the time. At times some clean vocals come into play, this happens most during moments that can almost be classified as drone. It adds a nice chunk of diversity and keeps things from growing stale in the vocal department.

Overall Harpoon have really tapped into their sound with Deception Among Birds. This is by far their most mature release to date. Deception Among Birds shows that Harpoon isn't afraid to experiment and also shows that they can do so without losing their vicious sound that we had heard on previous releases. Fans of grind, doom, drone, death, oxygen, and thrash should give this a listen. You won't be sorry, and the play count will shoot up like a rocket.

Psyphoria- Old School Hippie Tits EP

Psyphoria is a grind/death metal band from New Jersey. This EP contains five tracks and clocks in at under 15 minutes (mind you one of the tracks is over six minutes). You will find some of the most chaotic, weird grind that comes to recent memory on Old School Hippie Tits. Upon first listen you may find yourself scratching your head, because Psyphoria's sound is definitely one that isn't the easiest to digest, but if you give it time the terrifying sounds will all begin to make sense.

The guitar playing throughout the entire EP is very odd and at times has a bit of a sloppy sound.  For the most part this EP is driven by the complex playing and contorting rhythms rather than catchy riffs. That being said the riffs take unexpected turns and will keep you on the edge of your seat up until the end. The slow section featured about 3:30 into "Elixir" is one of the best examples of this. The direction that track takes from that point on plays out like an extremely trippy nightmare.

The drumming featured on this EP almost seems inhuman during some of the faster moments (which is a good chunk of this release). The pounding drums definitely get the adrenaline rushing  There is a ton of time changes throughout the EP's short runtime and it really keeps things fresh and interesting. A few sections on the could even be considered proggy, these sections give some time in between the chaos to take a deep breath and regain your senses just in time for your next pummeling.

Overall Psyphoria has created one hell of a monster with Old School Hippie Tits. Just when it seems like the band is going to derail and turn into a steaming pile of slop they pull it back together and pull you right back in. Fans of bands like Dillinger Escape Plan and In Vacuo will probably find something to their liking here. Though the band is more extreme than the ones previously mentioned they certainly have their similarities. Old School Hippie Tits is definitely a grower but after a few plays everything will click and after it does click you'll find it in heavy rotation for the awhile. Considering how solid this short EP is it is hard to imagine how much damage a full-length from these guys would do. Only time will tell. Get it.

Interview With Rico Unglaube (Goregast vocalist)

In this interview Rico Unglaube discusses a bit about the new album, his label FDA Rekotz, and their upcoming split with Fondlecorpse among other things. These guys have been playing death/grind for awhile now and are a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene. 

FF: If you can please explain to the readers a bit about the history of the band.

Rico Unglaube: Yes I can. Goregast has his origin in 1993, under the name of DISTRESS. 2 demos were released in the mid 90's, then in 1997 or 1998 we put the band on ice. In 2004, the band was heated again with some new musicians. Therefore, we change the name into GOREGAST. 2006 the first album, "Viva el Animal", 2007 "La Revancha" and now number 3 "Desechos Humanos". Our current line up: Torge Ließmann on drums, Rico Krause and Steve Kleinert on guitars, Ronny Thiel on bass and me, Rico Unglaube on vox.

FF: What made you want to start the project back up after seven years?

Unglaube: In 2004 the former guitarist, later bassist Jörn Böttcher called the band back to life and asked if I
want to sing again. I had nothing better to do, so I said yes.

FF: The new album is being put out from your record label F.D.A. Rekotz. Do you plan on putting out future Goregast releases on your label as well?

Unglaube: Principle yes, a label will always work with a good band will always hold the band. But if a bigger
label makes a better offer, if the band can achieve more, then I do not mind when there are elsewhere Goregast releases in future.But next year comes a split with the great dutch Death Metal clan FONDLECOPRSE out on FDA Rekotz.

FF: How has the response to the new album been so far?

Unglaube: The album will be released in 2 weeks so there's not so much response yet, so far some reviews and interviews are flown in, from different countries. Each one very good, full points or almost full points and a lot of warm words! An absolutely fantastic start.We are very pleased.

FF: Do you have a personal favorite track from the new album? Whether it be one you had lots
of fun making or one you just enjoy the most.

Unglaube: The favorite songs are changing again and again. But personally at most I like the rotten old school death metal songs as "Desechos Humanos" or "Honor The Dead". We have a good mix of fast and
slow songs, something for everyone. For example "Puerco de Dinero" is a fast, brutal Grindcore crusher, also one of my favorites. You see, somehow I like everything.

FF: Have you had a chance to play any of the new songs live yet?

Unglaube: We have played most of the songs live to see the reactions of audience. They were well. Since last week we have a new drummer, who will now be incorporated first. Up from late October/ early
November, we can play the entire album and previous albums on the stage again.

FF: Does the album have any reoccurring lyrical themes? And what does Desechos Humanos
translate to in English?

Unglaube: "Desechos Humanos" means "Human Waste". The whole album is about human disease. The songs are about many things that affect people. Sadists, murderers, boring workerholics, rapists, etc..
Every song is about a different theme, but overall, everything relates to the human disease.

FF: Having three albums finished now do you feel the writing process has gotten any easier?

Unglaube: The songwriting is even more easily from album to album. But we select much more. Songs that we do not want to take on the album, we throw away. Quality rather than quantity.

FF: During the track "The Boozer" there appears to be a little tribute to the band Cancer, or are
my ears just decieving me?

Unglaube: The text is about a drunkard, he's suffering from cancer. When I wrote the text, I also remember to Cancer's C.F.C. and thought that it could be viewed as a kind of Cancer tribute. I have nothing
against it, because I like the early Cancer very much.

FF: Are there any plans for a tour after the album drops?

Unglaube: Hopefully we play festival shows next year and a tour through Spain in spring and later also one
through Germany. We are more than open to play everywhere.

FF: Since the band reformed years back there has been very few lineup changes, is being in
Goregast a pretty laid back experience?

Unglaube: As we have found again in 2004, were Me and Joern, the only founding members. Rico K., Josch
and Steve played in a other band before. Joern left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Ronny. 2 months ago, Josch the drummer left the band after 7 years and was now replayced by Torge. But you're right, I could say we have a stable line up over the years.

Interview with Ken Padilla of Impaled Offering

Impaled Offering is a three piece band from New Mexico that plays a sickening blend of grind, death metal, and black metal. They were just recently signed to Pathologically Explicit Records and they plan on putting out their debut full-length soon. In this interview we discuss the history of the band, DIY merch, and many other things with the band's guitarist Kenneth Padilla.

Foul Feast: How did Impaled Offering come about?

Ken Padilla: Impaled Offering came about, shortly after I saw Ben Segural(Drums) Playing with his old band Virulency. I was extremely impressed with his skills, weeks after that show, he left Virulency. Right away I got in contact with him. The 1st time we jammed was at my friend Dom Dimas of Torture Victims house after a Warbringer show, we just messed around with random jams to test one another out, the guys from Warbringer thought we had been a band for a while, that basically told us we had something and to continue jamming, shortly after we picked up Joseph Chavez on Bass and Vocals. Joseph picked up the songs quickly and was more than a perfect fit. Thus Spawning Impaled Offering

FF: You guys recently got signed to Pathologically Explicit Recordings, how do you feel Impaled Offering fits in with the rest of their roster?

Ken Padilla: Well that's a hard one cause ,now we have to prove our work, due to the wicked line up Pathologically Explicit records contains , I mean fucken Gortuary is on it, Flesh Throne, Iniquitous(mike smith of Suffocation drums for them), Human Rejection and more............ I guess the way we do differ is we are the only Progressive blacken Deathgrind band on the label.

FF: How long had you been together before the label picked you up? And had you guys been in contact with any other labels before this?

Ken Padilla: We where a active band for about 9 months before we got picked up, so it was a pretty quick process from being local to signed ,Especially for a New Mexico band, not many labels look this way. Yeah we did send a lot of facebook links and demos out to various labels, the only one that actually talked to us 1st was Severad Records, but it didnt go through. Maybe a month later we contacted Pathologically Explicit Recs and Fernando offered us the deal. All I gotta say is thanks to the awesome extreme scene we are part of, all the cool peeps we have networked , or worked with. Without such a down to earth scene we would have never got so many fans and friends in such a short time.

FF: In the past you guys have made your own merch, now that you are on a label is that going to change or are you going to keep going the DIY route?

Ken Padilla: Our merch sich was crazy and still is at the moment, we just made a one color screen printer and printed very limited shirts and patch’s(and now our screen printers dead), so we will be getting merch help from the label, and hope to have merch on the labels site and at shows soon. I believe we will continue doing a lot on our own once we get more revenue

FF: How has the demo been received so far?

Ken Padilla: So far we haven’t got any thing but awesome feedback on it, and none of the feedback has been negative so far, the only thing we personally where not happy with was the quality of the recording, but it gets the idea out for now

FF: It's clear when listening to the demo that you guys aren't afraid to break barriers and you can't really be boxed into one particular genre. Is this something that plays a role in the writing process for Impaled Offering or does it just come naturally?

Ken Padilla: Well its a bit of both sometimes, due to the riff, tempo ,and genre changes. The riff writing itself comes naturally , putting the puzzle together that’s the more involved process. The way we approach every song is by not letting any riff sound the same or even use the same patterns, make sure it flows, and never repeating riffs in a song. I also have had a philosophy for a while, on the sound I want to create, I believe death metal should create chasms of sound that replicate transcending life and death , it's chaotic and savage but at the same time contains a certain elegance. So it's not just about being brutal, our writing style calls for a certain amount macabre, dissonant and tech tones.

FF: The plan is to have your first full-length out in 2012 according to the labels site. Has the writing process for the album started yet?

Ken Padilla: The album itself is ready to go to the studio, besides two songs in need of lyrics, we plan on releasing an album with 7 fully written songs, 5 on the spot grind tracks(we play 4 made up on the spot grind tracks every show to involve fans and friends on vocals), and 3 sound scape tracks. The only thing holding us back now the money to go record in a real studio, we plan on recording either at Arcane Studios in Arizona, or the the studio Noisear recorded Subvert the Dominant Paradigm

FF: Within your short time together you have already had a chance to share the stage with some brutal bands, is there any show that comes to mind that stood out the most?

Ken Padilla: I helped Cephalic Carnage run their Vapor fest 2011 in ABQ , due to the fact that they had to cancel coming down, and it was awesome meeting Disgorge US, and Rottenness of Mexico, there where also 7 other local acts on it that all killed it. But in general House party’s are the funnest to play cause they're so personal, and the energy’s right there in your face.

FF: Is the metal scene down in New Mexico strong?

Ken Padilla: The New Mexico scene is starting to build up, but it is still very weak. We have some wicked bands out here (Noisear, Torture Victim, Suspended, Dread, Laughing Dog, Intoxicated,Echoes of Fallen, Daemonius) and a hand full more, the bands mentioned back each other as much as possible. But the problem with New Mexico is a lot of bands say they wanna do it but don’t put in the effort, or make contacts, and also hate on every other band in town instead of making a strong scene

FF: Is doing a tour after the full-length release something you could see happening?

Ken Padilla: Yes we really want to get one going, at the moment our friend Joe Tapia bassist/vocalist of Noisear (Relapse Rec) wants to help us book a tour in the summer of 2012, due to the tons of huge bands and venues the guy knows . He has been a huge help in getting us connects and a great mentor to me personally, so I send mad props out to him, he will also be doing guest vocals on the album.

FF: Are any of the members of Impaled Offering in other bands that are active at the moment?

Ken Padilla: At the moment no, but we do play and listen to a vast variety of genres outside the the Extreme scene, just to keep our mind fresh and creative, such as jazz(not elevator)Folk,Classic rock, Bluegrass,Underground hip hop, World musics, Classical ect................

FF: Any final thoughts?

Ken Padilla: Just want to say support your local bands, the scene , throw any deathcore albums you may own in the trash , and pick up some real shit, grind, crust, punk, thrash, death metal, doom, metal, black metal ect.... get out to shows staying at home and just buying albums don’t support touring bands or the scene in general. Also shout out to all the Tyrants we hang with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Total Fucking Destruction/Skat Injector- Ubi Nihil Vales, Ibi Nihil Velis

Here we have a split of between Total Fucking Destruction and Skat Injector. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Total Fucking Destruction. For those out of the loop they have been together for quite awhile and have released a few albums and a slew of splits since their formation. Skat Injector is a self proclaimed "electro splatter gore" band from London. They are fronted by a  masked transvestite and have a had their fair share of releases and splits as well. Though the pairing of bands here may seem a bit odd this split is pretty enjoyable.

Total Fucking Destruction's side of the split is completely made up of live material. There are four previously released tracks on their side and they are "Human Is the Bastard", "Monsterearth Megawar", "Wounded Unit", and "Youth Apocalypse Right Now". The fact that there is no new material is a slight disappointment. With that being said the recordings here will make you want to go out and see Total Fucking Destruction live as soon as possible. The sound quality on the live recording is excellent aside from the vocals being a little low in the mix.

Now for Skat Injector, this cybergrind trio is actually more appealing than the others I've encounter since getting into grind. Still nothing overwhelmingly good but it has it's moments, but when compared to my previous introductions to the genre this plays out like Citizen Kane. Skat Injector's side has two tracks and comes out about equal in length to TFD. The first song "Anal Suicide" is an insanely catchy tune. The sickening shrieks of Zara Skumshot fit the music well and the lows on the first track add a solid variety. The electronic elements in both tracks are reminiscent of a soundtrack of some terrible 80's horror flick (which oddly enough isn't a bad thing by any means). Luckily, rather than just coming across as random noise like most of the other bands that fall into this category, Skat Injector actually has a fairly unique sound going on and it is worth a listen.

Overall this split is worth a look for those in search of good electronic influenced grind. Fans of Total Fucking Destruction won't find anything new here but the diehard fans may want to give it a look. As soon as I was told Skat Injector played a "cybergrind" of sorts I wasn't looking forward to hearing this at all but I sucked it up and listened and enjoyed it quite a bit. That should say something I suppose. This is worth at least one listen and has convinced me I need to give some of Skat Injector's other material a look.

Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay- Devolution

Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay are a goregrind/brutal death metal band from Czech Republic. The band formed in 1996 and have since released four full-lengths while in between doing splits with bands like Fuck the Facts and Screaming Afterbirth. Mincing Fury never limit themselves to the stereotypes of one genre, they play whatever they feel necessary and this may cause the album to be too crazy for many to handle.

The album is introduced with the soundtrack from the drug induced, mindfuck movie Requiem For A Dream, which is now re-titled "Requiem For A Fury". After this ends you descend straight down to the musical hell hole that is Devolution. The vocals on Devolution are insane. There is a dual vocal attack from Reef and Milcunt and many styles are used throughout the album. The majority of the album the vocals are the center of attention, whether the vocalists be using gutturals, gang shouts, hardcore yells, shrieks, squeals, croaks, or whatever other batshit vocal style one can think of.

Everything is very easy to make out on Devolution. The bass is audible the majority of the time and adds to the overall heaviness of this grind circus Mincing Fury displays with the album. Most of the tracks here consist of re-recordings of the band's past material but there are also five new songs for those seeking new Mincing music. The drumming is delivered with just as much energy as everything else featured here. Blastbeats are played with machinelike precision, and when a groove comes up the band runs with it.

The guitarwork here consists of tons of grooves that will make you want to punch the nearest human being (or animal) square in the face. Some moments of technicality pop up throughout the album, one of the most notable of these moments would be featured in the song "Blind". The track features complex riff that back the spastastic vocals that infest this release. The band throws in enough variety to keep things extremely interesting and tears the listener to shreds in the process.

Overall with Devolution Mincing Fury have managed to create something that can only be described as a full on brutal raping of the ear. This is what serial killers hear in their head all day as they commit their heinous crimes. This is highly recommended for those looking for a fun, heavy album to crank at full volume and scare everyone in the neighborhood. This is the musical equivalent of walking in on your parents doing the dirty.

Dethroned Emperor- War Grind Hell

Coming from New Brunswick, NJ Dethroned Emperor is a two piece grindcore band with some death metal tendencies. They just formed last year and so far this is their second release. Both releases are on tape and put out with that DIY mentality. War Grind Hell features just under fifteen minutes of filthy downtuned grind that is sure to make those around you cringe in disgust. Being named after a great Celtic Frost track these guys don't exactly play the style of music one would expect, but they do what they do well.

In terms of instrumentals the band just features a guitarist and a drummer. Even without a bassist Dethroned Emperor still manages to get a heavy, beefy sound. The guitarwork featured here is very lofi but for the most part the riffs are fairly memorable. There isn't a solo to be found and the band wastes no time getting technical. There isn't much about this release that sets it apart from what has already been done before but when listening it is clear to see that Dethroned Emperor play their style well enough to earn replays.

Both members contribute vocals like savages. They bark, shriek, and scream into the microphone until your ears feel they can't take anymore. The only effect aside from distortion on this release is reverb on the vocals. It gives the performance that great old school vibe that definitely fits the nasty sound Dethroned Emperor churns out. The drumming featured is very aggressive and for the most part given in a speedy manner. On occasional they will fall into a heavy groove, when this happens it is quite catchy and enjoyable but aside from these moments these guys just go straight for your jugular and they don't let go until you are rendered lifeless.

War Grind Hell also features a Terrorizer cover (which when listening to this it is clear that the band was heavily influenced by these guys). The track they cover is "Condemned System" and they stay true to the original and do it justice in every way possible. Overall this is just an assault on the senses, dark grindcore/death metal. It's extremely raw in style and runs at the perfect length. It starts off with a bang, gets it's point across and then ends as abruptly as it started. Highly recommended for fans of old school grindcore and death metal.
